The Shanghai Oriental Sports Center (SOSC) was designed on the occasion of the 14th world championships of the world swimming association FINA. The competition was won in 2008 in collaboration with gmp Architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner and the construction was realised in just under two-and-a-half years. It consists of an indoor stadium facilitating several kinds of sports, as well as cultural events, a natatorium, outdoor pool and a media centre. The individual sites are conceived in such a way that they could be used for many different purposes after the world swimming championships.
Water is the overall theme of both the park facility and the architecture of the stadiums and the media centre. It is also the element that connects the buildings.
Spacious, dynamic plants surround and link the stadiums. Their striking, purist borders comprising of continuous bench seating provide appealing places to linger.
In the south, a sports axis with integrated playing fields links the main entrance of the SOSC to the Huangpu River.
