Konzept

The architectural style of the Harvestehude district is characterised by typical Hamburg town houses from the early 20th century. Hence the front garden facing the street presents itself as a puristic and representational yet functional yard with an ensemble consisting of a simple carpet of paving stones and a green frame of yew and European beech hedges, picturesque Amelanchier, and a star magnolia set within a flowering carpet of perennials and hydrangeas.

The rear garden is designed in contrast to this and divided into distinct areas. It is accessed from the raised ground floor and the living spaces via a rostrum of natural stone with integrated seating and steps as a new base for the architectural addition, the winter garden. From here, the view is directed across a garden space framed by hedges, over the water basin in the lawn, past a band of grasses and perennials and out to the back part of the garden.

The water basin is a visual evocation of the ceiling pattern in the dining room and is anchored to the lawn with its moulded surround of natural stone. Small fountains form parabolas, and a larger fountain alludes to its “big sister” on the Binnenalster. The adjoining garden room is a place of retreat in the shade of large trees, protected from outside views by a sculptural hedge frame. Complemented by the owner’s sculptures, an introverted place of tranquillity and contemplation has been created under large ash, oak and maple trees.
