Park road
As part of a restructuring of Kassel’s museum landscape, the area at the entrance to Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe needed to be adapted to new use requirements for visitors while taking into account its historical heritage. A newly designed route within the park, which follows a historical path and whose course first had to be determined by exploratory excavations, strengthens the spatial connections of the site.
From the visitors’ centre at the tram stop, guests walk up a newly constructed series of steps to reach the park’s main entrance, which is designed in the style of an English landscape garden. To make Tulpenallee a visually more integral part of the park, its road profile is reduced, the footpaths are decoupled from the roadway, and the road surface is given a coating that emulates the colouration of the promenades.
For the reconfigured transition area between the Schlosshotel and the ballroom building, a historic grove of trees is restored. The trees stand within a continuous granular surface that is bordered by an encircling two-row step system. In order to underscore the significant value of this place as a historical monument, the cluster of trees and the historical buildings are illuminated by spotlights recessed in the ground.
