Green centre
A quiet, contemplative space pays tribute to the former location of the Dorotheenstädtische Kirche and at the same time fulfils the contemporary requirements for an inner-city recreational space.
Determined by the block structure of Dorotheenstadt and the dense, highly frequented city centre location, the design of the square is characterised by a clear and simple typology: A „green“ centre in the form of gently modelled lawns, crossed by two narrow, diagonally aligned promenade paths, is framed by a wide band of natural stone. The large lawn area centres the square and marks the location and size of the church, which was located there before the Second World War.
The lawns are surrounded by a wide band of paving. They can be used as sitting and lying areas and provide a variety of recreational possibilities. Incorporating the tree population, the green areas are surrounded by two rows of trees, each with square planting areas, forming a broad and light tree arcade. Several benches invite visitors to observe the delicate play of light and shadow of the sculpture-like pagoda trees.
